Start of natural gas-free Groenoord district: Europe and the Province make €3.6 million available

The Province of Zuid-Holland, the housing corporation Woonplus Schiedam and the Municipality of Schiedam jointly symbolically kicked-off the project to make the Groenoord district free of natural gas. Over the next 10 years this district will be provided with more than 2000 rental properties with a new heating system. The subsidy of more that € 3.6 million provided for this purpose by the Province of Zuid-Holland and the European Fund for Regional Development was celebrated as well.

Future-proof investment for the district

Berend Potjer, Zuid-Holland's Regional Minister for Energy is glad about the step forwards: “Zuid-Holland invests in cleaner energy for everyone. Groenoord is a good example of how we jointly work on affordable, sustainable solutions for the district. Without having to pay extra, the residents will receive a comfortable, sustainable home. I consider the money, time, and energy we are now investing in Groenoord a future-proof investment for the district. In addition, we will gain relevant experience for other municipalities in Zuid-Holland that face the same challenge.

New Energy for Groenoord

New Energy for Groenoord's ultimate target is a natural gas-free district, affordable and attainable to all residents. The Province's subsidy makes the first phase of the project possible. The home comfort of the houses increases and the approach is housing-cost neutral for the tenants. In time, this will also allow for major CO2-savings when the link to a heat grid is realised.
