Opening of the exhibition 'Eyewitnesses to the Flood Disaster (1953)'

At 11 places on Goeree-Overflakkee, permanent exhibitions tell the story of 'Eyewitnesses to the Flood Disaster'.

At the request of the late Mayor Chris van Hofwegen van Nieuwe Tonge, several inhabitants wrote down their story shortly after the disaster. Their reports and the memories of the young people from that period form the basis for a special, permanent exhibition in the landscape of Battenoord: ‘Eyewitnesses to the Flood Disaster'. It is partly based on the novel by the same title, written by Willem van der Ham.

On 24 May, Regional Minister for Zuid-Holland Rik Janssen opened the exhibition:

“I am proud that we are able to open this wonderful exhibition on this historic site, one of the worst-affected areas of the flood disaster. With the help of a multitude of volunteers, we can map and visualize this event respectfully. It honours the sadness, the remembrance, the reconstruction and the importance of water security, also in the future. This site is a special place of remembrance for the islanders, a piece of water heritage about an event that is of great importance in the history of the Province of Zuid-Holland.”

The story of the eyewitnesses

At various locations in the landscape of Battenoord, exhibitions and expositions about the disaster have been realised, but also about the operation of the tide and the importance of water safety. In addition to a visit to the exhibition 'Eyewitnesses to the Flood Disaster', it is possible to take a walk through the affected area Battenoord, where panels with information and eye-witness testimonies have been installed. The eyewitness accounts are also available in an app. Specially trained Flood Disaster ambassadors are at hand to guide visitors during the walk.

Impetus for Goeree-Overflakkee

This project is made possible by, among others, one of the 7 heritage lines of the province: Goeree-Overflakkee. With the help of the heritage line, we want to give the cultural heritage on the island a valuable future to be experienced. We do this together with many partners on the island. The area programme Goeree-Overflakkee has also contributed to this project. The province and the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee join forces in this project to give Goeree-Overflakkee an extra impetus to strengthen the regional economy.
