Will the hydrogen revolution start on Goeree-Overflakkee?

Goeree-Overflakkee intends to be energy-neutral in 2020. To achieve this, the island is investing in, among other things, hydrogen. The Province is one of the partners in the hydrogen covenant H2GO.

Under the heading “Energy-island”, Goeree-Overflakkee is on course to be energy-neutral in 2020. The developments are rapid: The firts home to be heated by hydrogen was opened in Stad aan ‘t Haringvliet (Dutch) this week.

Natural gas network suitable for hydrogen

Also this week, a research by network operator Stedin and research institute Kiwa was published, showing that it is possible to use the existing natural gas network of Stad aan ‘t Haringvliet for hydrogen. 'Stad', as the residents call their place of domicile, is a unique project because the residents themselves were the first ones to take the initiative. In cooperation with companies, the possibility of stopping the use of natural gas as early as in 2025 is being explored.

Just as the Province, Stedin is a partner in the hydrogen covenant H2GO. Tineke Keuzenkamp, programme manager H2GO: “Goeree is well on its way to become an important hydrogen demonstration area for Zuid-Holland and the Netherlands. Because of Goeree-Overflakkee's enthusiasm and efforts, we are able to gain very valuable knowledge and experience for all of the Netherlands. We want to involve everyone in this. That is why tomorrow, during the New Budget Festival, the Province and the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee will hold a masterclass for government stakeholders.”
