Baljeu calls for reinforcement of European industrial policy

“Regions play an important part in the acceleration of the industrial transition. To achieve this, we, the government, have to join forces with the industrial sector. It is important that the European Committee pays more attention to this in its industrial policy", says Regional Minister Jeanette Baljeu.

During the European Industry Days 2018, Regional Minister Baljeu *(European and international policy) took part in a panel discussion on the regions’ role in the industrial transition. Zuid-Holland, with its large clusters of port and industrial complexes and its horticulture, is one of the stakeholders in this discussion. The cooperation of local governments and the business community in the regions plays an important part in the European industry's transition. The industry called for the European Committee to focus on the industrial sector, regions and knowledge institutions in its economic policy for the coming period.

Common vision for the future

The European Industry Days 2018 were organised by the European Committee to inform the stakeholders on the strategic approach of the industrial policy and the Committee's activities to further promote the development of the industrial competitive capacity in Europe. The stakeholders from various sectors – industry, finance, science & research and the government – took part in various workshops to provide input for a common European view on industrial transition.

Opportunities for Zuid-Holland

The focus on industrial modernisation in Europe offers Zuid-Holland opportunities to obtain additional support for the sustainabilization and digitisation of its industry. The climate agreement has given it the immense task to accelerate the reduction of the CO2-emissions of its port industry cluster and horticulture. At the same time, Zuid-Holland wants to take advantage of the opportunities of its innovative SME in the smart industries – for instance by using regional field labs – for which cooperation with similar regions is an absolute necessity.

The European Vanguard network, of which we are board members, plays a leading part in strengthening the cooperation with other European regions. It is important that funds are made available during the European Committee's new funding period to reinforce the economic development in the regions”, says Regional Minister Jeannette Baljeu.
