“Amsterdam-Brussels-Cologne inspiration for Chinese town”




The King's Commissioner Jaap Smit is on a trade mission in China this week and will attend the Bo’ao forum where he will speak about, among other things, urban networks.

During this forum current strategic questions, such as the 'One belt one road'-strategy, the new Chinese Silk Road that connects Western-Europa with China will be focussed on. Smit will conduct a debate on cluster cities. One of the prime examples of cluster cities is the development of Jing-Jin-Ji: Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei as one urban network. In this urban network, a new town is arising: Xiong’an New area. “We can propose the urban area Amsterdam-Brussels-Cologne as inspiration for Xiong’an. And we can share our experiences in the field of logistics, infra, horticulture, sustainable urban development, and water management”, says Smit. The business community will be represented during the trade mission by Hans de Boer of VNO-NCW and around 165 businesses.

Feeding mega-cities

Smit will discuss the way in which Dutch businesses and knowledge institutions can play a part in the development of Xiong’an with the Governor of the Chinese province of Hebei. For instance, in the field of sustainable urban development and “Feeding Megacities'. Zuid-Holland and Hebei (a province with over 67 million citizens) have maintained a relationship for over 10 years now. Jaap Smit will have one of the discussions together with Prime Minister Rutte, who will also attend the Bo’ao forum. In addition, the cabinet will also be represented by Ministers Kaag, Schouten and Bruins, and State Secretary Van Veldhoven.

Rapid follow-up

Jaap Smit's journey will have an immediate follow-up. Themes that he will raise at a high political level will be brought up during the Province's trade mission led by Regional Ministers Baljeu and Bom-Lemstra from 13 until 18 May 2018.
