Delta Congress 2017: work on a sustainable and safe delta continuing

The Province was well represented during the National Delta Congress on 2 November 2017 with the Rijnmond-Drechtsteden Projects, fresh water Western Netherlands, and FRAMES.

Work on water safety is never done. That is why the Province of Zuid-Holland cooperates with (international) partners on water safety, fresh water and spatial adaptation (a proper alignment of spatial planning and climate). These and other issues were the central issues during the National Delta Congress 2017, focusing on constant work on a sustainable and safe delta.

Various projects in which the Province is involved were shown in the Delta Parade: sub-programme Rijnmond-Drechtsteden, fresh water Western Netherlands, and FRAMES, a European project on multi-layer safety, for which the Province is implementing a pilot in Alblasserwaard-Vijfheerenlanden.

Multi-layer water safety: FRAMES

Flood Resilient Areas by Multi-layEr Safety (FRAMES) is a European project in which 5 countries gain knowledge of the so-called multi-layer water safety. The province of Zuid-Holland is the lead partner of the project, which started on 1 October 2016 and runs for 3 years. Besides preventative measures such as dike improvements, multi-layer water safety targets the defensibility and resilience of the area and its inhabitants, if they ever were to be confronted with flooding and water nuisance. During the congress, the Province presented the FRAMES-pilot Alblasserwaard-Vijfheerenlanden. In this area, research is being done on how the combination of prevention, spatial planning, crises management and recovery can contribute to the safety and resilience of the area and the society.

Fresh water

During the plenary meeting, the Delta Commissioner highlighted the KWA-project (Climate-resilient Water Supply Central Netherlands). During extremely dry summers, the water supply ensures that the western part of The Netherlands gets its water. The project is a good example of the cooperation of water boards and the area.

National Delta Congress

The National Delta Congress is organised each year by the Delta Commissioner and aims to connect all those active in the field of water. During this congress, people from social organisations, the business community, science and authorities working on the Delta programme may strengthen their ties.
